Asian openbill stork 钳嘴鹳 (Anastomus oscitans) at Jurong Lake on 27 June 2020

Asia openbill stork is a large wading bird. It is commonly found in India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. The species distinguish feature is the gap between the arched upper mandible and recurved lower mandible. This feature helps it to open freshwater mollusks.

This bird is rare in Singapore, however, there were thousands of this kind of bird appeared in Singapore in Dec 2019. Many birders and media captured hundreds of openbill stroks flying in the sky.

We are lucky to encounter one openbill stork at Jurong Lake Gardens on 27 June 2020, and observed its foraging behaviour, please see the clips below:

Openbill stork's habitats include inland wetlands and crop fields. It feeds mainly on mollusks, frogs and insects. It is a beneficial bird because it feeds on invasive pest snail, golden apple snail.

A black bittern @ Jurong Lake?

Photos taken at Chinese Garden this morning. The size of the bird is comparable to cattle egret and Chinese pond heron and much bigger compared with yellow bittern. It is tame but still prefer hide in the grasses. I feel that it is a black bittern.

Madarin guide walk@SBWR,August(XXXII)

It is a sunny day and the tide is very low during our walk along the mangrove boardwalk. As the mudflat is exposed, we spot lots of crabs especially those tiny ones who are hiding in the mud during the high tide. A crocodile is spotted near the main bridge, but it disappears soon.
The olive-backed sunbirds are still feeding the chicks outside of the visitor center.
You need not only the lucky but also good eyesight to spot the crocodile here
