It is a sunny Sunday and the tide is low during our Mangrove walk. We spotted some common creatures of Mangrove, such as crabs, water monitor lizard and mud skippers. More luckily, two otters appear in the pond near the visitor centre.

It is also a good time for birding as those migrate birds are still staying in the SBWR and resident birds are busy in their love business.

When we reached Japanese garden, all little egrets and cattle egrets already left the Banyan tree for breakfast.

Lesser Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna javanica) or Wandering Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna arcuata)
Hopefully, they are Lesser Whistling Ducks, native water fowl.

Lesser Whistling Duck and Wandering Whistling Duck as both look almost the same. There are some differences as below:
Lesser: yellow eye ring, not-so prominent white plumes, no spot on breast, red uppertail coverts, lack of prominent dark crown and nape.
Wandering: no yellow eye ring, prominent white plumes, spots on breast, pale undertail coverts, prominent dark crown and nape.

Just like the pond in the Japanese garden, you can always find yellow bittern around the Eco lake of SBG. However, this guy is more alert and ready to fly away. To take photo of this bird really needs more patience.

How to get there:

1.Serangoon MRT Station, Exit E (66351)

2. Bus 70 or 70M, 10 stops

3. Alight at St. Vincent De Paul Church @Yio Chu Kang Road as showed here

4. Cross the road (Shell Petrol Station opposite), Go down stairs, Cross the bridge

Then you can find this last Kampong before it disappears
*Mosquito repellent is highly recommended.

家八哥 Common Myna

家八哥（ Common Myna or Indian Myna (Acridotheres tristis) ）體長為25公分，身體褐色，頭部羽色灰黑色，嘴喙及眼部周圍裸露皮膚為黃色。当前小贩中心周围活动的主要是其亲戚爪哇八哥(White-vented Myna，Acridotheres grandis)。

这次在Mainhide看到最多的就是中杓鷸了，长且下弯的嘴是它最大的特点了，习惯于集体行动。

当天天气很好，晴空万里而且海风习习，参与活动的朋友都很有眼福：水獭，湾鳄，冠斑犀鸟都露了脸，更不用提树上的爬树蟹和弹涂鱼，平常只闻其声不见其人的知了也显身了

即使成群的候鸟飞回遥远的北方，双溪布洛依然生机盎然，值得一游

经常可以看到一只紫鹭在裕廊湖周围（裕华园，星和园，高尔夫球场，地铁站草地）活动，但一直没法确认是否是同一只紫鹭。

清晨和傍晚时分，星和园的荷花池是最常近距离观看紫鹭的地方

不过一定要仔细搜寻，因为它的颜色和枯萎的荷叶很相近

池鹭是种候鸟，这是我们首次在裕廊湖一带观察到池鹭。

This is the first time we spot it here, although ~mantamola~ showed a flock of Chinese pond herons appeared @ Pasir Ris Park recently

给池鹭拍照很吃力，它在长草丛里觅食，手头未升级的傻瓜相机无法很好的聚焦

This bird is extremely alert and fly away when I am still quite far from him

This Little Heron (Butorides striatus) visits the pond frequently
绿鹭也很机警，不过这只公园常客能够容忍摄影师的镜头

It seems most Cattle Egrets (Bubulcus ibis) left Singapore already and this one with bright breeding feather is still hanging around
曾经聚集了数百只牛背鹭的裕廊湖已经盛宴不再，只有少数几只牛背鹭没有北行，依然悠闲享受湖畔美景。内在的激素已经改变了羽毛的色彩,不知是否能够挑动它那一路北行的心

First trip to Beting Bronok (BB)

There are at least two B.B. in Singapore: Bukit batok and Beting Bronok. However, most Singaporean are not familiar with Beting Bronok, a submerged reef located near Pulau Tekong and only exposed during extremely low tide.

The crabs are camouflage experts. Here is a elbow crab (Family Parthenopidae)

The sponge crabs normally hold a sponge or an ascidian, and move quite slowly

Spider crab (Family Majidae). This guy lets sponges grow and cover its body

In the sea pen, there are many pretty sea pen porcelain crabs (Pocellanella picta) hide inside.

These toadfishes and sharks are relatively luck as this cage is still in the water and they should survive longer compared with the dried fishes in another cage

It is a very early trip to Palau Semakau and the tide is not very low. The sunlight is good, but most pretty creatures hide. Anyway, we still did our best to find out some interesting animals.

Thank Civet girl for this invitation and we really enjoyed sighting this kind of lovely creature in the filed. There are around 10 civets in this small campsite and most of them are baby.

It is really impressive for us to seek wild mammals with a torch in a modern city. And this also remind me the time I was searching frogs in remote stream in the night.

This grey heron keeps on chasing the purple heron for around half an hour, maybe just for fun or for territory

Finally, this Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) has a nice time in this small pond

铁路风景线Green Corridor

今年七月，马来亚铁路局将中断通往Tanjng Pagar的运输服务。这段纵贯新加坡南北的铁路线将归还新加坡政府。新加坡自然协会提议保留这条绿色走廊，同时向公众宣传此提议的重要性。上周六，自然协会组织了一次徒步活动，让大家领略新加坡少有的铁路沿线风景。谢谢汉中的邀请。
This July, the land along the railway will be returned to Singapore government and the usage of this land is still unknown. Nature Society Singapore (NSS) proposed to keep this unique and invaluable green corridor. Some NSS members set up http://www.facebook.com/#!/thegreencorridor and hope more public can understand and support this proposal. Last Saturday, NSS organized a trip along a 2 km railway near Clementi. Thanks Han Zhong for the invitation and we are really enjoying the trip and the beauty of this green corridor. I hope the readers of this blog can also take some time to visit there:

This part of railway has been cleared and LTA planed to build a road for International Business Park. NSS hope LTA can do some adjustment and keep this part of green corridor.

今天有幸参加了国大学生会组织的植树活动。这是国大学生拯救地球的活动之一，目标是营造一个“在热带雨林中的校园”。

I am very happy and honored to participate the Campus in Tropical Rainforest (CiTR ) Plant-A-Tree project this morning. Although more than 25 person planted three trees only, it was a exciting experience. Toddycats conducted an impressive nature walk in Kent Ridge after the tree planting.

After transplanting trees, took a photo proudly --‘I gave life to a tree’.

It is sunny and high tide during the bird watch session and the tide going out during mangrove boardwalk session. The shore birds, mainly whimbrels, staying on the mudflat near the mainhide. The unique root systems of mangrove are exposed as tide running out, tree climbing crabs and fiddler crabs are enjoying their dinner. mini horseshoe crabs swimming in the stream, mudskippers walking/juming on the mudflat... ...We even spot a paradise tree snake on a sea hibiscus.

Rescue baby civet 拯救小麝猫

This baby common palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) was found in a army camp. My colleague Civet Girl was invited to participate in this rescue operation. Adelle, Civet Girl and I transferred the baby civet to night safari. Hopefully, it will grow up and be released into the jungle soon.
这是一只椰子狸/椰子猫，大约一个月大。可能跟随妈咪觅食，误闯训狗基地，妈咪惊慌失措弃子而逃。驯养员发现无助的小狸猫，通知了相关人员。我的同事狸猫小姐受邀参与了拯救活动。最终小狸猫被送去夜间动物园动物医院照看，长大后放生丛林。
It is said this baby civet is around one month old. Is it cute?
